KidLit Cove founder, Judith Graves, speaks with Atlantic Canadian author and historian, AJB Johnston about his recent middle-grade fiction release with Acorn Press, INTO THE WIND: A Novel of Acadian Resilience.
Book Summary: A gusty August morning … two children spot sails on the horizon … foreign soldiers enter their village. Johnston holds the reader close with this moving tale. The main characters, Marie and Charles, are fictional, but the story is not. It is based on well-documented historical facts about the 1755 removal of Acadians from Grand-Pré. Into the Wind presents that well-known event in a fresh way. It makes for a poignant, suspenseful novel about how two kids and a village deal with forces and events far beyond their control.
Author Bio: A.J.B. (John or Jay) Johnston is the author or co-author of thirteen books on different aspects of the history of Atlantic Canada and over 100 articles in scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers. The Canadian Historical Association awarded a Clio prize to his Endgame 1758: The Promise, the Glory and the Despair of Louisbourg’s Last Decade. John was made a chevalier of France’s Ordre des Palmes académiques in recognition of his many publications on the history of the French in Atlantic Canada. His first novel, Thomas, A Secret Life, was published in 2012. He lives in Halifax with his wife Mary.
